22nd ANNUAL AMER ARI CONTINUES AT WAIKOLOA BEACH RESORT

Venerable Kings’ Course Playing Host to One of Collegiate Golf’s
Most Prestigious Events at Waikoloa Beach Resort

WAIKOLOA, KOHALA COAST, HAWAII—Play continued in the 22nd Annual Amer Ari tournament at Waikoloa Beach Resort on Thurs., Feb. 2, on the Big Island of Hawaii, with the University of Texas Longhorns, the No. 1-ranked team in the country, holding a 3-stroke lead with a two-day score of 270-287=557.

UCLA maintained a close second with a two-day score of 275-285=560. The University of Southern California hop-scotched into third place with a two-day total of 276-285=561, with the University of Washington in fourth place at 275-287=562.

Low score of the day was 68, recorded by two players: Thomas Kua (University of Hawaii Manoa) and Austin Quick (Arizona State University), whose round included a hole-in-one in the 188-yard 11th hole. Pontus Widegren of UCLA led as the tournament’s low medalist going into the final round at 66-69=135.

“The course played tougher today,” said former PGA Tour professional Casey Martin, who is now coach of the No. 2-ranked University of Oregon Ducks. “It was a very big challenge with the wind blowing as hard as it was this morning.”

“Still,” Martin said, “this is the highlight of our year; getting out to play and compete in Hawaii…it’s a real treat.”

One of the most important collegiate tournaments of the year, a total of 20 teams are participating in the Amer Ari in 2012, including eight of the top 15 ranked teams in the U.S. Many past winners have gone on to realize great success on the professional tours and throughout golf.

Past medalists in the tourney include some of today’s best-known PGA Tour stars, including Notah Begay (Stanford, 1994), Matt Kuchar (Georgia Tech, 1999 and 2000) and Anthony Kim (Oklahoma, 2004).
