Amer Ari Intercollegiate: Future Stars of Golf to Appear at WBR

In 2012, Jordan Spieth was a standout collegiate golfer at the University of Texas, leading a talented Longhorns team to a No. 1 national ranking. What a treat it was for resort guests and local golf enthusiasts to watch the future No. 1 player in the world and Masters winner play at that year’s Amer Ari Intercollegiate tournament at Waikoloa Beach Resort.
The tournament — which began in 1992 — draws some of the best collegiate teams and players in the country, and is viewed as an important part of their annual schedule. “

The Amer Ari is the first event of the new year and there is always a sense of anticipation around it,” says Casey Martin, coach of the University of Oregon golf team and former PGA Tour player. “The field is always loaded and everyone is anxious to get the spring season started in a good way. My hope for my players is that they prepare with intensity because they know what a big event is ahead of them. It is also a great reward for my players to get of the main- land and enjoy the islands for a few days.”

In addition to Martin’s University of Oregon squad, the field this year will feature 18 teams, including traditional powerhouses Jordan Spieth (left and above center) played in the Amer Ari Intercollegiate in 2012. Georgia Tech, Auburn, USC, UCLA, and Stanford. The current No. 1 collegiate player in the country and defending individual medalist, Justin Suh, is scheduled to compete alongside his USC teammates.
