Tourism
Resort living, real estate investment opportunities, spectacular golf courses,
the scenic coast and other Big Island attractions draw both domestic and
international visitors.
- In 2004 visitor arrivals reached nearly 1.3 million. Domestic arrivals
represented 76% of visitors.
- Year-to-date visitor arrivals on the Island of Hawaii are up more than
17% compared to the same period last year. 2004 visitor arrivals for
the island were up 6.9% over 2003.
- Hotel occupancy for the island averaged 70.2% in 2004 and is up
3% year-to-date (through May 2005).
- The Kohala Coast features approximately 3,703 hotel rooms (based
on a 2004 survey). More than 1,700 of these rooms are in the
Waikoloa Beach Resort.
- Average length of stay by domestic visitors exceeds 7 nights per
visitor and stays by international visitors average more than 4 nights.
- Visitors spend an average of $150 per day. Dining expenditures
represent 33% and shopping expenditures represent 25% of nonlodging
expenditures (based on a 2003 survey).
- Visitors from Japan represent 73% of international visits. Canada
represents 12%, Oceania 6% and other Asia 4%.
