“Seven Chefs, One Big Island” Luxurious Dinner Launches HFWF 2015

Hilton Waikoloa Village Building on the enthusiasm generated by Hawai`i Island’s inaugural participation last year, the opening night of the Hawai`i Food & Wine Festival is once again taking place at Waikoloa Beach Resort on Saturday, August 29, with the theme “Seven Chefs, One Big Island.”

The presenting chefs include both Jayson Kanekoa from the Waikoloa Beach Marriott Resort & Spa, and Hans Lentz of Hilton Waikoloa Village.

They will be joined by Andrew Sutton (Napa Rose, Anaheim, CA), Michael Meredith (Meredith’s Restaurant, Auckland, NZ), Roy Yamaguchi, Richard Rosendale (U.S. Representative Bocuse d’Or 2013), and Ming Tsai (Blue Ginger, Wellesley, MA).

“With more than half of the agricultural lands in the state on Hawai`i Island, there is a diversity of local products for our chefs to choose from,” says the Festival’s co-founder Alan Wong. “With local beef, coffee, abalone, and kampachi sourced from Hawai`i Island, we look forward to seeing some great innovation and creativity from our guest chefs.”

    11:00 am
Waikoloa Beach Marriott Resort & Spa

    Poke Contest

From family BBQ’s to fancy restaurants, everybody’s got their favorite way to make Poke, Hawaii’s traditional pūpū or side dish that mixes fresh fish or seafood, with all kinds of add-ins: the seasonings, herbs and spices, fruits, veggies, seaweed and secret ingredients that make it so special. The Poke Contest gives home cooks and top chefs a chance to show off their best recipes in four different categories (traditional, soy sauce, cooked and seaweed), and to compete for cash and prizes. Best of all, once the judging is finished, the audience gets to sample the competition and taste-test for themselves.

    Clyde “Kindy” Sproat Falsetto Concert

    05:30 pm
Waikoloa Beach Marriott Resort & Spa

    Clyde “Kindy” Sproat Falsetto Concert

This unique concert features the Island’s talented male singers of all ages, who lift their voice into the upper register and captivate the audience with the stories behind the songs.

The concert is named for the late singer, guitarist and storyteller, Kindy Sproat, perhaps best known for his paniolo (Hawaiian cowboy) songs and stories. Sproat grew up in a remote valley in the North Kohala District and went on to sing at Carnegie Hall, the National Folklife Festival and more. His musical legacy is an honor to share and perpetuate.

    Under the Blood Red Sun

December 7, 1941 - On a Sunday morning, TOMIKAZU (TOMI) NAKAJI and his best friend BILLY DAVIS are playing baseball in a field near their homes in Hawaii when the Japanese launch a surprise attack on Pearl Harbor. As Tomi looks up and recognizes the Blood-Red Sun emblem on the fighter planes, he knows that his life has changed forever. Soon, his father and grandfather, both Japanese Americans, are arrested and taken to internment camps. His mother loses her job because she is Japanese. Although Tomi feels frightened and ashamed of his native land, he is quickly forced to become the man of the family. “Under the Blood-Red Sun” is an unforgettable tale of courage, honor, survival and friendship.
