Don’t go home without it!

Top 7 must-have Big Island things to take home
Many a great Hawaii vacation includes a shopping list for friends and family back home. At Waikoloa Beach Resort on Hawaii, The Big Island, shopping is easy and fun—with so many stores, choices for every budget, a convenient resort shuttle and beautiful tropical surroundings just about everywhere you look. We’ve put together a list of suggestions, in no particular order, to help you get started on your shopping spree!
1. FOOD. Take a taste of Hawai’i home to share all year long—like world-famous Kona Coffee, available by the bag in 100% Kona, flavored blends and decaf varieties at Resort locations. Your co-workers will go nuts for fresh-roasted Hawaiian macadamia nuts too.
2. FASHION. Everybody loves vacation tee shirts, and you can do more, at Waikoloa Beach Resort’s fashionable selection of boutiques and clothing shops for men, women and children. Teens love surf wear; the little ones are big fans of colorful gecko shirts and shorts; moms and dads are always styling in aloha shirts and dresses. And did we mention slippers?
3. FINE ART. Capture memories of your dream Hawaii vacation in a stunning original work of art and make it a part of your home forever (or just eliminate the word). Visit our galleries for the wistful ocean-scape, the tropical still life or magnificent piece of sculpture that speaks to your heart—and have the experts ship home it for you.
4. FANCY BLING. Are you on your honeymoon? Celebrating a birthday, retirement or special anniversary? Find something that sparkles with the joy you feel today. Explore our Waikoloa Beach Resort jewelers for stunning selections in diamonds and fine gemstones, Tahitian pearls, designer originals and Hawaiian heirloom jewelry. Both Queens’ MarketPlace and Kings’ Shops shopping centers and Hilton Waikoloa Village have made-in-Hawaii jewelry for men and women that embrace the spirit of the islands.
5. GOLF. ‘Fore you forget, stop by the golf shop at Kings’ Course, and pick up a dozen balls or a logo visor for the golfer in your life.
6. BAGS & LUGGAGE. Fill up your luggage already? We can help! Kings’ Shops and Queens’ MarketPlace have stores that offer sturdy, island print bags and more, or pick up reusable Hawaii themed totes, great for taking home as gifts.
7. MADE IN HAWAII. For yourself, from the islands. Do yourself a favor and “shop local” to find that one special thing just for you, made here on the island, with aloha, by a local artisan. Touch the gleaming koa wood pens and picture frames. Toss a vivid batik pareau around your shoulders on a chilly day. Admire handcrafted Christmas ornaments in ceramic or shell. Feel the tropical breeze in Hawaii-made fragrances and bath products. Splurge on Island jewelry or special works by local artists and “live aloha” wherever you go.

A Family Affair

Any vacation that involves a swimming pool is likely to please the little ones in the family. When waterslides are involved, so much the better. Add long stretches of white- sand beach, a warm ocean, and whales frolicking offshore during winter months, and you get a vacation that the entire family will thoroughly enjoy.
Such a place is Waikoloa Beach Resort, where two hotels and a host of condominium accommodations offer pools, places to splash and play, and easy access to the Pacific Ocean.
“Waikoloa was designed with kids and families in mind,” says Scott Head, Vice President of Resort Operations. “The vision of the developers more than 30 years ago was to create a place where families could spend quality time together, play together, and create lasting memories. We have preserved and enhanced that vision over the years, and we are very proud to offer such a variety of family experiences to our guests. Waikoloa is really very unique on Hawai`i Island, as it is in the entire state.”
At the Hilton Waikoloa Village, visitors will find one of the most distinctive water experiences in Hawai`i at Dolphin Quest. Whether you are simply enjoying lunch at the Lagoon Grill overlooking the dolphins playing in their lagoon, or participating in an actual dolphin encounter, the experience is thrilling. Several encounter programs are offered, ranging from a 10-minute introductory experience for toddlers (ages 2-4) to longer snorkel encounters for older kids and adults.
The Hilton also offers three freshwater pools, including one that features a popular 175-foot twisting waterslide…talk about keiki fun!
Next door at the Waikoloa Beach Marriott Resort & Spa, families can gather for the day at two meandering swimming pools, one of which includes a shallow, sandy-bottom kids area; while the other is where the waterslide is found. Or, you can stroll down to ‘Anaeho‘omalu Bay and the half-mile long swimming beach that fronts the hotel. On this protected beach, older kids can snorkel or ride boogie boards; or the whole family can sign up for glass- bottom boat rides, hydro-biking, or kayak adventures.
If your family enjoys playing golf together — or if you are looking for a great way to introduce your kids to the game — a special experience awaits at Waikoloa Kings’ Course. Called Family Golf Days, during the summer months (May through August), families can play the Kings’ Course after 3:30 p.m. for only $50 per adult and $25 for juniors including complimentary junior Nike rental clubs. One of the most scenic courses on the island, there’s no better way to spend a few hours playing together than on the Kings’ Course.
If sailing, scuba diving, or whale watching excursions are of interest, Ocean Sports has multiple locations around Waikoloa Beach Resort to get you going. This company has been specializing in family recreation on the Kohala Coast for more than 30 years. In addition to ocean excursions, they can also give you a lesson and get you set up on a stand-up paddleboard. “Every day is an adventure!” says Kay Brooks, director of sales and marketing for Ocean Sports. “Come and have your Big Island adventures with us!”
“The range of activities we offer is what sets us apart,” Head says. “From learning to dance the hula to playing a round of family friendly golf, from a trek through historic petroglyph fields to an ukulele lesson, Waikoloa Beach Resort offers something fun for everyone. You can even arrange a helicopter tour to fly over the lava flow at Kilauea…now that’s an experience everyone remembers.”
Once the sun sets, activities give way to entertainment. Both Hilton Waikoloa Village and Waikoloa Beach Marriott Resort & Spa offer exciting luau several times a week, replete with great food and traditional Polynesian dancing and story-telling.
Plus, at the Kings’ Shops and Queens’ MarketPlace, live music, cultural shows, and entertainment is offered almost every night of the week. Movie nights are popular, as are free monthly concerts, and seasonal activities from Easter to Fourth of July to Christmas are celebrated with fun events and festivities.
“Waikoloa is a special place,” Head says. “Our primary goal is to provide families a retreat, a safe place where they can enjoy one another, enjoy the environment, and create memories that last forever. If we can do that, our guests will want to come back year after year.”

Super ‘Ukulele Celebration

The 13th Annual Great Waikoloa ‘Ukulele Festival on Saturday, March 2, brought approximately one thousand fans of the little instrument with the big sound into Queens’ MarketPlace. Starting the annual festival was a free instructional class taught by noted teacher Roy Sakuma and his staff. Sakuma is the protégé of the world famous “Ohta-San” who also graced the stages with guitarist, Nando Suan. The fun day was filled with great Hawaiian music on two stages. Master of Ceremonies “Mr Aloha” Danny Kaleikini enchanted the crowd with ageless songs, and young ‘ukulele artists like Nick Acosta, Tamlyn Tamura, and You Tube star Aidan James, stole the show. One of the best highlights was when Nā Hōkū Hanohano Award winner Sean Na‘auao was joined by Auntie Aulani Young and her ohana for beautiful, impromptu hula with the band.
If you missed the ‘Ukulele Festival, you can still enjoy wonderful hula and Hawaiian music when you visit Waikoloa Beach Resort. Queens’ MarketPlace showcases three different hālau (troupes) three nights a week at the Coronation Pavilion, plus monthly “mini concerts” with some of the Big Island’s favorite entertainers, all complimentary. Kings’ Shops hosts free weekly performances on Center Stage, including slack-key master John Keawe, the big-band stylings of Kahulanui, folk artist Rob Decker, and keiki (children’s) hula on Aloha Friday. And, don’t forget our newest member of the family, Lava Lava Beach Club at ‘Anaeho’omalu Bay, with live Hawaiian music and hula every night!

New Year, New You at Waikoloa Beach Resort

Many people’s New Year’s resolutions include doing more exercise, eating more nutritious foods, losing weight, and taking better care of themselves. If that includes you, Hawaii is the perfect place to start positive new habits, or amplify the good health habits you already have.
The Big Island in particular is known for its wealth of sports and recreational opportunities, health-conscious menus, and outdoor activities of all kinds. Here in the land of triathlons and fresh foods from the land and sea, it’s hard not to be active and eat well. With a year-round climate suited for everything from hiking to surfing, from bicycling to golf, residents and visitors alike make a point of doing something outdoors every day.
At Waikoloa Beach Resort, your options for a healthy lifestyle are endless. Ocean sports abound, spas and fitness centers are conveniently located, healthy cuisine is available on most menus, and classes from yoga to strength training are offered just about every day of the week.
The Perfect Place to Get or Stay Healthy
“Waikoloa is the perfect place to get or stay healthy,” says Scott Head, Vice President of Resort Operations. “From the moment you wake up in the morning until you turn in at night, you can do yoga, snorkel, paddle a kayak, bike, run, play golf, work out in a spa…there are so many options here that there’s certain to be something everyone will enjoy.”
If you and your family want to rent a bicycle for a day of exercise and sightseeing, head over to Big Island Motorcycle Company in Kings’ Shops or Bike Works Beach and Sports in the Queens’ MarketPlace, where a complete line of rentals are offered. The roads in Waikoloa Beach Resort are perfect for leisure rides, and more adventurous riders can trace the cycling portion of the Ironman Triathlon along Queen Kaahumanu Highway if they so desire.
State of the Art Fitness
A state-of-the-art fitness center with a full schedule of classes is found at Kohala Spa inside the Hilton Waikoloa Village. Daily classes given by certified instructors include Pilates and yoga, core conditioning, body sculpting, stretching, and more.
At the Waikoloa Beach Marriott Resort & Spa, guests can enjoy a peaceful morning yoga on ‘Anaeho’omalu Bay, or exercise the entire body with stand-up paddleboard adventure; build upper body strength with a daily kayak excursion; or rent mask, snorkel, and fins for a colorful underwater exploration. The resort’s hydro-bike is also a popular way to enjoy working out while admiring paradise on ‘Anaeho’omalu Bay.
And the knowledgeable concierge staffs at both resorts can assist guests with everything from surf lessons to hiking and bird-watching tours with the experts from Hawai’i Forest & Trail, through both the rainforest and dryforest of Pu’u La’au on Mauna Kea.
Back on resort grounds, golf enthusiasts should try walking the Kings’ or Beach golf courses when you play. It’s a scenic — and healthy — day of fun.
Fresh from Land and Sea
When it comes to dining, resort guests are well taken care of. Fresh fish from local waters is on almost every menu, and most chefs find most or all of their produce from local — some organic — farms.
At Waikoloa Grill’n Bar, for example, patrons find a menu that includes several lighter, healthier menu choices. “Our dishes feature fresh island flavors that you want to taste when you’re on vacation, because you don’t find them anywhere else,” said owner Dickie Furtado. “We make a paella with fresh-caught mahi mahi, clams, shrimp, garlic, Maui onion, and saffron. Our Grilled Caesar Salad can be customized with choice of shrimp, chicken, or blackened ahi. And wait till you taste the Signature Calamari!”
At Hilton Waikoloa Village, head to Kamuela Provision Company for a full range of fresh seafood choices. If you prefer a completely vegetarian meal, try the Hamakua Mushroom Risotto with Truffle Oil paired with an Organic Caesar made with locally-grown Romaine lettuce and Big Island avocados.
“Fruits here in Hawaii are fantastic,” says Charles Charbonneau, executive chef at Hilton Waikoloa Village. “So our breakfast buffets feature fresh fruits year-round, depending on what is in season. At all of our restaurants, we put an emphasis on local produce and local fish, and we adjust our menus as produce comes into season… right now we’re adding a roasted beet salad with local greens and Puna goat cheese.”
At Hawaii Calls Restaurant & Lounge in the Waikoloa Beach Marriott Resort & Spa, lighter dinners include fresh fish in a variety of tasty preparations, and salads crafted from locally sourced produce.
If you are interested in preparing fresh, locally grown foods for yourself, head to the Kings’ Shops Farmers Market, held every Wednesday from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Here you’ll discover the best of the local bounty, talk story with farmers about their harvests and island-made products.
“If you are someone who already practices great health habits, you will find Waikoloa Beach Resort a very supportive place,” Head says. “And if you’re someone whose New Year’s resolutions include starting a healthier lifestyle in 2013, there’s no better place and no better time to start than here and now.”

Variety is the Spice of Life When Dining at Waikoloa

For the first-time visitor to the Hawaiian Islands, going to a lū‘au is a must. So much of Hawai`i’s traditional Polynesian culture, cuisine, dance, and song are packed into a lū‘au that it becomes a feast for all the senses and an exciting, eye- opening education at the same time. To that end, two of the very best lū‘au on Hawai`i Island are found at Waikoloa Beach Resort, the Legends of the Pacific Lū‘au at Hilton Waikoloa Village; and the Sunset Lū‘au at the Waikoloa Beach Marriott Resort & Spa.
Both of these lū‘au shows are a treat for the entire family, with delicious food (think hulihuli chicken, fresh fish, shoyu marinated beef ribs, and the traditional imu kālua pig), thrilling fire dancing, and captivating songs and dances of the Pacific.
But the cuisine of the islands is far more varied than that. Reflecting the diversity of the peoples and cultures who have migrated to Hawai`i over the years, visitors are treated to authentic Chinese, Japanese, Thai, and other cuisines; as well as a very popular blending of local ingredients with traditional American preparations that is called Hawai`i Regional Cuisine.
Best of all is the fact that Waikoloa Beach Resort is a place where the very best of these many cuisines are found. In all, Waikoloa features close to 30 different dining options, from sit-down meals in scenic settings, to grab-and-go snacks and fast foods for busy schedules; from juicy burgers in the Kings’ Grille after a round of golf, to an aromatic cup of coffee during a morning stroll.
Some of Hawai`i’s best-known and well-established chefs have eateries at Waikoloa, including Roy Yamaguchi (Roy’sWaikoloa Bar & Grill), Peter Merriman (Merriman’s Market Café), and D.K. Kodama (Sansei Seafood, Steak & Sushi Bar). But just as exciting is a new Hawaiian barbecue joint that is opening under the direction of up-and-coming chef Philip “Ippy” Aiona, who recently starred on Season 8 of Food Network Star.
Nationally known chains such as Romano’s Macaroni Grill, Arby’s, Dairy Queen, Marble Slab Creamery, Starbucks Coffee, and Subway Sandwiches & Salads share the Waikoloa food stage with local chefs and restaurants unique to the Big Island, such as Charley’s Thai Cuisine, Island Fish & Chips, Paradise Pizza & Grill and Kona Brothers Coffee.
One ever-popular choice for lunch or dinner is Waikoloa Grill’n Bar (formerly known as Buzz’s Sand Trap). Co-owner Dickie Furtado offers diners lighter, healthier menu choices, side by side with timeless favorites such as steak and salad meals.
At the beachfront Lava Lava Beach Club you can get some sand between your toes and enjoy lunch or dinner prepared by the same folks who have been pleasing visitors and locals alike for many years at Kona’s renowned Huggo’s. Surrounded by swaying coconut trees and tropical trade winds, Lava Lava features fresh fish tacos and burgers as well as the Chef’s creative preparations of steak, Hawaiian seafood, and more.
And in addition to the popular lū‘au format, each of the two hotels at Waikoloa are known for the excellence of their culinary offerings. Hawaii Calls Restaurant & Lounge at the Waikoloa Beach Marriott Resort & Spa is a three-meal-a-day restaurant where patrons will find all their favorite foods from back home, plus prime rib and cracked crab buffets on Friday and Saturday evenings that leave no one wanting more.
At Hilton Waikoloa Village, nine dining options range from the Lagoon Grill (casual dining overlooking frolicking dolphins in the Dolphin Lagoon) to Kamuela Provision Company, with a spectacular sunset view featuring steaks and island fresh seafood. For a great breakfast buffet, you can head to Water’s Edge, and after a day of fun, several tempting options await you for dinner, including Dona & Toni’s Pizza, Imari Teppan & Sushi, and Kirin Chinese.
Wherever you are at Waikoloa Beach Resort, you are certain to find culinary delights that will please your whole family. The only problem is choosing from so many tempting options!

Designing Waikoloa— Architect Ted Garduque
Architecture in Hawai`i is a wide mix of styles, each representing a distinctive period of the island chain’s history, and more importantly, reflecting the diverse peoples and cultures that have migrated here over the years to call Hawai`i home.
From thatched roof Polynesian hale to sprawling Plantation-era structures and modern tropical palaces, the architecture of these islands tells a fascinating tale. Perhaps no one knows that story better than Ted Garduque, whose Honolulu- based architectural firm, Garduque Architects, LLC, has been adding new chapters since 1987. Among his many professional achievements are several of the most prominent buildings in Waikoloa Beach Resort: Queens’ MarketPlace, Kings’ Shops, and Kings’ Clubhouse.
A graduate of the University of Oregon (BArch) and Cornell University (MArch), Garduque has taught architecture at the University of Hawai`i, University of Oregon, and Cornell University. “Architecture in Hawai`i is so diverse that it is an absolute joy to be working in the islands, and drawing off so many influences,” he says.
When Garduque set about designing the buildings at Queens’ MarketPlace, his idea was to incorporate many of those influences in one location. “Shoppers experience a bit of
what old Hawai`i felt like during different historical periods,” he says. “We wanted visitors to get an authentic sense of the different cultural influences — from native Hawaiian, to Chinese, to missionary, to Japanese, among many others — that have made Hawai`i the special place it is today.”
The Kings’ Clubhouse, adjacent to the Kings’ Golf Course, was “inspired by a reference to the Royal and Ancient traditions,” Garduque says, referring both to the ali`i (royalty) of old Hawai`i and to the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews, Scotland, and its grand clubhouse overlooking the first hole of the Old Course.
“in fact, the gray color of the clubhouse is called ‘St. Andrews Gray,’” he notes. “While the architecture does not mimic the Royal and Ancient, it strives to present a regal and stately posture.”
Garduque grew up in Honolulu, and apprenticed with several of Hawai`i’s most influential architects. “That gave me an important sensitivity to the historic architecture of the islands,” he says. So when he started his own firm and began making his own mark on the architecture of the islands, he possessed a very deep knowledge.
His affiliation with Waikoloa dates back to 1987, when he was brought into the project by then-President of Waikoloa Land Company, Thos Rohr. “We had many discussions over the years, ” Garduque says. “How could we create our own image, our own interpretation of what architecture should be at Waikoloa? What would be our sense of place and make us different from Mauna Kea or Hualalai? Waikoloa appeals to a broader spectrum of the market than some of the other resorts on the island, but we always wanted to retain a sensitivity to the ali`i of the islands.”
Visitors to Waikoloa Beach Resort often remark how they are treated like modern-day royalty. They owe thanks, in part, to architect Ted Garduque and his architectural design for making them feel that way.

Family Friendly Fourth

The Fourth of July Fireworks Extravaganza is one of Waikoloa Beach Resort’s signature events that allows us to give back to the community. This annual alcohol-free and drug-free event is a family-friendly celebration. This past July, two local bands were highlighted at the event, one from Kona and one from Waikoloa. Both bands wowed the crowd with a variety of energetic dance hits from the 1970s and ’80s and gave audience members a chance to enjoy each other’s company and dance to some great live music while waiting for the 8 pm hour when the fireworks show began. This year, two non-profit organizations benefited from the events at Kings’ Shops and Queens’ MarketPlace: The United Cerebral Palsy Association of Hawaii and The Food Basket, Hawaii Island’s Food Bank. A Tribute To Waikoloa’s Visionary— Ronald F. Boeddeker, 1938-2010

The Boeddeker family dedicating the plaque to Waikoloa’s visionary in 2011.
The name Ron Boeddeker may not be as well known to resort guests as Bill Marriott, Conrad Hilton, or other titans of the leisure industry. But that is exactly how Ronald F. Boeddeker would have wanted it. He did not seek the spotlight, spoke to the media infrequently, and preferred to remain low-key and behind the scenes. Without Boeddeker‘s vision, though, Waikoloa Resort may never have happened. “My dad had a special gift,” says Cary Krukowski, Boeddeker’s daughter, who spent many months as a youngster living with her family on the Big Island while the resort was being developed. “He was the kind of visionary that doesn’t come along very often. He had no fear of failure, no boundaries to his vision. He was always looking to create something extraordinary.” Boeddeker first laid eyes on what today is Waikoloa Beach Resort in 1972. At the time, the land from makai to mauka (beach to inland) was not much more than vast lava fields as far as the eye could see.
But Boeddeker saw something more. “He took my mom to look at the property,” Krukowski tells. “‘Look at this land,’ he said to her. ‘Can’t you see golf courses and hotels?’ My mom looked around and said, ‘Are you crazy?’ All she could see was black lava and a beautiful ocean.” Not one to be easily dissuaded, Boeddeker persisted. Eventually he found others who saw the same potential in the land that he did, and were willing to invest. Early investors to the project included the Texas-based financiers the Bass brothers, hotel developer Chris Hemmeter, and Johnny Bellinger, the longtime powerful head of First Hawaiian Bank. “He’d run into all kinds of people who would say ‘No,’” Krukowski says. “But he had a way of making people believe in his vision.” One of the things that makes Waikoloa so unique is the resort’s support for the local community and for the Hawaiian culture. The music, dance, arts and crafts of Hawai`i are celebrated year-round throughout the resort. That directive came early on directly from Boeddeker, and is gladly adhered to today by every Waikoloa employee.
“My dad was very fond of the Hawaiian culture, and of the people of Hawai`i,” Krukowski says. “He embraced everything Hawaiian. He greatly respected the deep traditions of the islands, and loved the fact that the culture is so family oriented. He was very family oriented himself, and that gave him a strong bond with the people of Hawai`i.”
Boeddeker passed away in 2010 at 71 years of age. His family installed a plaque to his memory that guests pass on their way to the beach from the Waikoloa Beach Marriott. Krukowski says that is exactly where her dad would want to be. “Waikoloa is a beloved place to our family,” she says. “This is where my dad really started to dream big, and it is so gratifying to see this special place he envisioned more than 40 years ago become a world-class resort enjoyed by so many.”

LAVAMAN 2012

The 15th annual Lavaman Triathlon will take place at Waikoloa Beach Resort on Sunday, April 1. The Olympicdistance race begins at 7:30 am with a 1.5 km (.9 miles) swim in `Anaeho`omalu Bay. The swim portion is followed by a 40K bike ride and 10K run, with an awards party and beach barbeque to celebrate and finish the day.
More than 1,200 people participated in the 2011 race, making it one of the biggest events of the year at Waikoloa Beach Resort. Last year’s champions were 25-year-old Erich Wegscheider (1:53:31) of San Jose, CA, in the Elite Men’s Division, who finished first overall; and 32-year-old Bree Wee (2:04:28) of Kailua-Kona in the Elite Women’s Division. It was the second consecutive year that Bree won the Elite Women’s Division, and her 2011 time was good enough for a 14th place finish overall.

The ages of participants ranged from the youngest at 15, Allen Mercer-Love of Albuquerque, NM, to Dieter Heycke, 76 years young, of Honolulu, HI. Racers of all ages came from across the United States and Canada, with several from Japan taking part as well.
“As the Lavaman Triathlon comes into its 15th year, we are proud that it has become one of the top triathlons in the U.S. and definitely one of the most popular, selling out this year in only a few days,” says race director Gerry Rott. “We have been named ‘The Best Party in Triathlon’ because our competitors not only enjoy the challenges that the Lavaman course offers, but also the inviting atmosphere of Waikoloa Beach Resort and what it offers not only for the athletes, but for their families and friends as well.”
Starting in waist-deep water that averages 80 degrees in April, swimmers start and return to the south end of the beach fronting the Waikoloa Beach Marriott Resort & Spa. The bike ride segment travels out and back on the Queen Ka`ahumanu Highway (using a portion of the same bike course that Ironman participants follow) then back into the resort. The run portion is through the Waikoloa Beach Resort and the grounds of the Hilton Waikoloa Village, with varied terrain consisting of lava, sand, coral trail, road, lawn, and flagstone path with a beach finish.
“We have competitors from the pro ranks—such as former two-time Ironman World Champion, Chris McCormack, who calls it his favorite Olympic Distance Race—to those athletes racing in their very first triathlon and raising money for worthy causes,” Rott says.
Ranked as one of the “100 Best Races” by Triathlete Magazine, the 2012 race is sold out with more than 1,600 entrants, but volunteers are always needed, and there are many activities throughout the weekend that everyone is invited to join, including a Sunset 5K Run/Walk on Friday, March 30; and a Lavakids keiki race on Saturday, March 31.

Future PGA Tour Pros At Waikoloa

The future stars of the PGA Tour were on display at the Waikoloa Kings’ Course in early February, participating in the 22nd Annual Amer Ari collegiate golf tournament. The University of Texas Longhorns (pictured above), the No. 1-ranked team in the country, held a wire-to-wire lead for a 5-stroke victory over the USC Trojans. The Trojans, though, celebrated their teammate Jeffrey Kang, who beat Texas’ Jordan Spieth in a sudden death playoff to take home low medalist honors for individual play. “It was a great week,” said Earl Tamiya, Men’s Head Golf Coach at the University of Hawai`i Hilo, tournament host. “We are proud of all the teams who came to the Big Island and participated, and we’d especially like to congratulate the Texas Longhorns for an impressive win.” A total of 20 teams participated in the Amer Ari in 2012, including eight of the top 15 ranked teams in the U.S.
Diners will be encouraged to “get some sand between their toes” when dining at the new Lava Lava Beach Club, opening at Waikoloa Beach Resort in April.
